One of fastest growing fresh salad chains

It all started back in the school days where three undergraduate buddies Nicolas Jammet, Jonathan Neman, and Nathaniel Ru sat in the classroom wondering what the future was going to be like. Most of us can relate to that. The constant questioning of the future and what our purpose in life really is. Little did these three friends know that after graduation they would be owning one of America’s greatest startups.

 

The Washington natives decided to target a niche market of healthy salads. The simple process they followed was healthy farm-to-table salad. That means that all of their products sold at each Sweetgreen chain was fresh and free of harmful chemicals. The first shop they ever opened was located in Georgetown back in 2007 and was funded by 40 friends and relatives. Several years later, the three friends manage 31 chains worldwide.

 

In addition, the guys took part in venture capital funding, adding up to $95 million.

 

The item stemmed from three guys that were looking for something better to eat on campus. Often times in high school there are not very many places to eat both on and off campus. Many students have to rush to find food before the next class starts.

 

From day one, we are all child entrepreneurs. During the childhood days it is all about selling toys and juice boxes. That is why the standard desk jobs are not nearly as appealing as wanting to own a business. When owning a business you are the leader and can make decisions as you see fit. The desire to have better food options is what really gave the three friends motivation to start the healthy salad chain.

 

So many food chains have deviated from healthy fresh foods and just want to produce the fastest food possible to keep the business moving swiftly. The salad business was a dream and a great way to raise money.

 

The salad chain is about more than just selling a fresh piece of lettuce. It is all about selling healthy ideas and values to keep the farms and places to eat connected.

 

Nathaniel Ru founded the Sweetgreen food chain just three months after he received his undergraduate degree in business from Georgetown. Opened in 2007, it now has 40 stores open in the United States. In addition to offering food it has philanthropy, music (sweetlife festival), and technology. Ru offers a Sweetgreen festival celebrating music, food and the community coming together.
